Let´s compare and discuss!

Case 1

John Humphiries aged 62, is a lorry driver who is proud of being well-dressed for work.  However, his employer told him that he must not come to work in a collar and tie to drive his lorry.  If he did so, he faced the sack .  When working, Mr Humphries, an ex-Royal Airforce man, wore dark blue trousers, a light blue shirt, and a red and grey striped tie. He felt he looked smart and impressed the customers. " If you present yourself properly, you look good and get respect." , he said.  Mr Humphries´employees were not impressed when he refused to give up his collar and tie. They wanted him to conform to the company´s new image of casual clothing such as T- shirts or sweat shirts.  They even threatened to dismiss him if he did not accept their new dress code.  Union officials advised him to accept the change and follow the company´s policy .
He agreed.

Case 2

Yoshiaki Nishiura, a 25 year-old lorry driver from western Japan, was sacked because he dyed his hair brown.  (This is a popular fashion with a growing number of young Japanese).  Although he apologized  and dyed  it black again, he was still fired. His employer, Mr Yamago, believed that behaviour like Mr Nishiura´s undermined company discipline and corrupted morale.  He blamed it on American influence.  " We need drivers to maintain a professional appearance to make a good impression," he said. A Japanese journalist said, " Japanese firms expect all employees to look the same and think the same.  When you join a company, you sign away  your human rights."
Mr Nishiura is going to sue his employer for unfair dismissal.

What do you think?

  1. with refference to case 1, i think that john humpshire has a formal personalitiy and he had a previous formal job at the royal airforce, because of that,he is used to being well-dressed.
his employer doesn´t think the same, john has to respect the policy of the company.
if i was the employer,i wouldn´t care about the colthes;however, i would pay attention to his performance at work.

regarding case 2, i think that Yoshiaki Nishiura made a mistake because he didn´t pay attention to the policy of the company;however, he tried to solve this problem.
As regards, his employer i believe he was wrong and he should consider giving him another oportunitie.
i believe that Yoshiaki Nishiura it´s right to sue his employer for unfair dismissed, because it is a case of discrimination.

  3. In my opinion when you accept a job and you enter in a new company you should agree with the company culture, rules, instructions and more. That’s why, if do don’t agree with those things, you’ll have a bad relation with your boss, colleagues and subordinates. You should be prepared to change if the company needs it. On the other hand, companies should let some liberty to the employees because if they don’t so it some day the employees will leave the company because of the pressure.
Referring to the cases I don’t agree with the bosses, because both are too dictatorial and extremist.

  4. I think when you work in a company must know their policies.
Some companies and in these cases the image of employees find it more important than performance, because they feel that employees do not respect the rules.

  5. In my opinion everything depends on which job you have and company rules must be followed.

If you want to be good to your boss, or have good relationships with others on the company, you must follow the politics and policy rules of them.
Braking rules will break your relations and maybe you will lose your job.

On the other hand, it depends on which job you have, why you will wear smoking if you are an engineer? it’s almost stupid to think of that kind of things.

But not always is good to break rules, especially when you have a strict boss.
