Yellow is sunshine. It is a warm color that, like red, has conflicting symbolism. On the one hand it denotes happiness and joy but on the other hand yellow is the color of cowardice and deceit.
When this guy mentions yellow maybe he wants to show he has been deceived and feels really disappointed.

I think the yellow lemon tree symbolizes the acid feeling remaining after meeting someone who you fall in love and she seems to promise the sky, and then ends in nothing, or in disappointment. Over time this feeling of sweetness becomes bittersweet because you remember that feeling of happiness but also it becomes sad and melancholy.
